Obituary

Dorothy Jean Phillips, 71, was called home to rest by our Heavenly Father on Saturday, January 16, 2021. She was born in Fort Deposit, Alabama, the daughter of Catherine Dortch and the late Eddie Hue Owens. Dorothy attended the George Washington carver School, Montgomery, Alabama; the Carver Hill School, Crestview, Florida. Dorothy was employed by the Okaloosa County School District for 32 years, Southside Elementary School, Riverside Elementary School, in roles as maintenance technician and food service cafeteria monitor. Dorothy was one of Southside Elementary School's original staff members that transferred to the new Riverside Elementary School. Dorothy provided childcare services to lots of families in the local community; she provided in-home caretaker services as needed to her mother. Dorothy also worked 20 years as an employee of the former King's Tastee Freeze in Crestview.
Dorothy was a committed volunteer with the Crestview Concerned Citizens Group, the Carver Hill School Class of '67, the American Cancer Society; and other community sponsored events. Dorothy was a dedicated member of the Church of God by Faith where she served as Sunday School Superintendent. Dorothy had a passion for reading and for gardening. She enjoyed traveling across the U.S to attend family reunions. Dorothy spent years taking down and recording family history while she quietly amassed a genealogy treasure. Dorothy had a gentleness, an inviting smile, an infectious laugh. She had a way of making others feel valued and worthy. Dorothy's humble spirit. love of caring for others, will live on in her children and grandchildren, the pride, the joy of her life. Dorothy was a person of deep faith who lived her life in service to others. Dorothy's loving family includes daughters; Leslie Michelle Lee Phillips and Wanda Otto; son: Patrick Knox; grandson: Sergeant First Class Brian Reynolds, U.S. Army; granddaughters: Kayla Otto and Keziah Knox; her mother: Mrs. Catherine Dortch; siblings include brothers: Anthony Dortch, Paul Dortch, the late Michael Von Dortch (Retired Chief Master Sergeant U.S. Air Force); the late Joseph Claude Dortch (Retired, Lieutenant Colonel, U.S. Air Force); her sisters: Greta Laressa Dortch, Sheila Jones, Shirley Coleman, Linda Lozier, Cynthia McCain, Vivian Dortch, and Angela Bonita Dortch. Extended family cousins: Jacqueline Daniels, Joe Ann Lewis, and many other relatives. Preceding her in death her doting grandmother, the late Rosa hunter Grimes; her uncle, James Edward Phillips (Retired, U.S. Army, Master Sergeant); he aunt, Elizabeth McCurdy. Dorothy leaves a host of other family, friends, and loved ones celebrating her life. Special thank you to the Carver Hill Class of '67, the lifelong friendships in support of each other, a daily inspiration to Dorothy.
