Obituary for Mrs. Effie Bea Jefferson

March 22, 1929 - February 9, 2021
Dothan, Alabama | Age 91

Loving Wife, Mother, Sister & Friend!

Mrs. Essie Jefferson age 91 of Dothan, AL, passed away Wednesday, February 9, 2021 at her resident surround by her loving family.
Effie Bea (Cootney) was born in Brundidge, Pike County Alabama; March 22, 1929 to Carrie Bell and Johnnie Smith.
Her parents and siblings preceded her in death.
Raised in a Christian home she accepted Christ at an early age and joined Pleasant Hill Missionary Baptist Church. She received her early education in the Pike County public school system.
Her father wanting a better life for his family, relocated them to Ashford; Houston County, Alabama in 1949. She continued her education in the public school of Houston County, Ashford Elementary and Junior High.
Before the early demise of her father; she promised him, she would not leave her mother Carrie Bell alone with the children in the household. There were several nieces and nephews in the home. She adopted a nephew (Wendell Smith Aka Dick), paying 50 cents.
She later joined the St. Joseph Missionary Baptist Church under the tutelage of Rev. L.F. Matthew where she remained faithful and active for many years.
After helping her mother raise her nieces and nephews she met and married Robert Lee Jefferson in 1975. They were together more than 50 years before he preceded her in death.
During Robert's life time wanting to serve with her husband she moved her membership to Grant Chapel AME. Being concerned with the young people doing the right thing, she was active with the youth. On Sunday mornings she was their transportation service. As the children grew up she would proudly say that's my boy or my girl. I used to paddle them when they got out of line ; they had to mind me. While working as a school crossing guard, told the police of Ashford if the children call 911 I am not going to jail. Their parents can go but the children are going to mind me.
Due the failing heath their adopted son came from Rochester New York and relocated them to an assisted living facility in Dothan, Alabama.
Her niece Crystal (Chris) Williams became their care taker. After Robert's demise,
longing for her home church she moved her membership back to St. Joseph Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Patrick Smith.
Chris moved Effie Bea into her home, she and her husband (Ray) became full time care takers until her death.
Bea loved crossword puzzles, bingo, line dancing and she was a comedian always ready with a joke to make you laugh.
On February 9, 2021, Bea answered the call and transitioned over.
She leaves to cherish memories son, Wendell (Dick) Debbie, Rochester New York, special niece Crystal (Ray) Dothan, Al., a host of nieces and nephews, cousins, church families Grant Chapel and St. Joseph, and neighbors in Ashford and Dothan.
Before glaucoma took her eyesight and you called and asked her what she was doing, she would reply working meaning she was working her crossword puzzle book. She especially liked the bible cross word books.
