Obituary for Mrs. Ida Mae Carswell

November 5, 1925 - February 24, 2019
Slocomb, Alabama | Age 93

Loving Wife, Mother, Sister, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother & Friend

Mrs. Ida Mae Carswell age 93 of Slocomb, Alabama (St. Peter Community) passed away Sunday, February 24th at the Southeast Health Medical Center in Dothan, Alabama.

Ida Mae Carswell, affectionately known as "Mama, Mama Ida, Granny, Granny Granny, and Aunt Ida", blessed the world with her presence November 6, 1925, to the proud parents of the late Lalar and the late Bonnie Madison.

At an early age, Ida accepted Christ and was baptized at the family's home church, St. Peter Baptist Church. She was a faithful member and enjoyed teaching Sunday School, serving on the Usher Board, and organizing Easter and Christmas Programs. Later in her life, Ida moved her membership to Antioch Baptist Church.

Ida attended elementary school at the Madrid Township School. During this time farm life and helping the family was a priority. However, Ida recognized the value of having an education and encouraged her entire family to attend school and graduate.

On November 3, 1943, Ida married John Carswell and had five "wonderful" daughters. John and Ida were a hardworking couple and managed to own their farm located on Sonny Mixon Road. They taught their daughters these fine qualities:
• Honor God
• Work hard, complete the job, and have pride in your completion
• Treat people the way you want them to be treated - not how they treat you
• Go to school and study hard
• Above all, treat people fairly
As children and as adults, our family took pride in remembering the values, beliefs, and traditions set forth by John and Ida Carswell.

Ida worked for E. D. Mitchell of Mitchell Funeral Homes in Graceville, Florida. She was allowed to travel to several resorts while under the employment of the Mitchells. She also worked for Mrs. Janie in Dothan, Alabama. Upon retirement, she enjoyed flowering, fishing, gardening, cooking, and sewing. Ida was very talented and enjoyed baking her famous Sweet Potato Pies and Sweet Bread. YUM! YUM!! YUM!!! The community, family, and friends enjoyed eating many good meals at MaMa Ida's table.

We will forever remember the lessons taught and the faithful, strong woman, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, and "Community Mother" who poured so much into our lives. We are so thankful to God for her. Her loving memories will be forever cherished by family.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, John Carswell, and her sisters, Zillie Boone, Mary McKinnie, Ethel Jackson, and brothers, Sam Madison, Celo Madison, Mose Madison, and Ezekiel Madison.

She leaves a stellar legacy to carry on the Carswell Family Honor in her five daughters – Vera Carswell, Emma Adams, Ruby Smith, Lillie (Earnest) Jett, Alice (Leland) Scott; one adopted daughter, Belinda Brown; and one step daughter, Johnnie Mae Carswell Smith; four siblings: Warren Madison, Major Madison, Frances Alston, and William Robinson; many loving grands and great grands - Tony Davis, Hope Kistner, Demetria (Zack) Clemons, Nerissa Adams, Roslyn J.
